Indonesia's smoking toddler kicks habit

Indonesia's smoking toddler kicks habit

JAKARTA – A two-year-old Indonesian boy who smoked about 40 cigarettes a day has kicked the habit after receiving intensive specialist care, a child welfare official said Thursday.

Ardi Rizal shocked the world when a video of him drawing heavily on cigarettes appeared on the Internet in May and drew attention to Indonesia's failure to regulate the tobacco industry.

"He has quit smoking and the most important thing is he doesn't ask for cigarettes anymore," national commission for child protection secretary-general Arist Merdeka Sirait told AFP.

Six months after his father gave him his first cigarette, the overweight boy was smoking two packs a day and threw violent tantrums if his addiction was not satisfied.

Accompanied by his mother, the boy left his village on Sumatra island in July to undergo treatment in the capital.

"He received psychosocial therapy for one month, during which therapists kept him busy with activities and encouraged him to play with kids of the same age," Sirait said.

"We diverted his addiction from cigarettes to playing."

Ardi's case has highlighted the tobacco industry's aggressive marketing to women and children in developing countries like Indonesia, where regulations are weak and many people do not know that smoking is dangerous.

Sirait said the government had given financial support to Ardi's parents, who were ignorant of smoking's dangers and used cigarettes to keep the toddler happy as they worked long hours at a street market.

"Ardi was very happy when he left Jakarta this morning as he has really missed his father in the village," Sirait said.

Cigarette consumption in the Southeast Asian archipelago of some 240 million people soared 47% in the 1990s, according to the World Health Organization.

Judge Kara DioGuardi leaves 'American Idol'

Judge Kara DioGuardi leaves 'American Idol'
Ellen DeGeneres, Simon Cowell have already quit Fox talent show

Confirming weeks of rumors, FOX announced Friday that Kara DioGuardi is leaving "American Idol" after only 2 seasons. The songwriter and A&R executive joined the program in 2008.

She was previously best known for writing hit songs for Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears, In a statement released by FOX, DioGuardi said, “I felt like I won the lottery when I joined 'American Idol' two years ago, but I feel like now is the best time to leave 'Idol.' I am very proud to have been associated with [the show] — it has truly been an amazing experience.

I am grateful to FOX, FremantleMedia and 19 Entertainment, as well as the cast, crew and contestants, for all they have given to me. I look forward to my next challenge, and want to thank everyone who has supported me.

All the best to everyone on Season 10!”
"Idol" creator and executive producer Simon Fuller praised DioGuardi, who had been expected to bring more real-life industry critiques to the contestants. “Kara is one of the world’s best songwriters,” Fuller said. “She has been passionate and committed to 'Idol' over the last two seasons. I will miss having her on the show, but I look forward to working with her in music for many years to come.”

With DioGuardi's departure, only Randy Jackson is left from last season's quartet of judges. Simon Cowell announced his move to "X-Factor" in January of 2009 and Ellen DeGeneres left on her own accord earlier this summer.

Rumored replacements include Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez and Elton John.

Beauty queens, organizers divided over sending RP bets to China By ROBERT R. REQUINTINA

Beauty queens, organizers divided over sending RP bets to China

By ROBERT R. REQUINTINA

http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/275286/beauty-queens-organizers-divided-over-sending-rp-bets-china

Personalities and organizers of the two biggest beauty contests in the country yesterday appeared divided over sending candidates in this year’s beauty pageants in China, which include Miss World and Miss International contests. Roberto De Venecia, president, Mutya ng Pilipinas, has expressed concern over the risk of sending candidates to beauty pageants in China.

“It is certainly alarming and we cannot downplay the risk of sending Philippine participants to pageants in China at this time. The collective sentiment all over China cannot be overlooked. There could be zealous nationals who can be wayward. While blame cannot be universal, it can affect the participant or even any visitor from the Philippines,” De Venecia said.

He said that the country at this time should avoid any degree of fun fare, involving beauty pageants.

“Ideally, as a sign of respect, we should avoid any degree of fun fare as a sign of reverence (then let the issue subside for the time being),” De Venecia said.

He added: “On the extremes, the delegates can sign a manifesto of concern and offer their profound sympathies.”

The Mutya ng Pilipinas sends contestants to annual beauty contests abroad such as Miss Asia-Pacific, Miss Intercontinental, and Miss Tourism International. It also selects the country’s delegates to the Queen of the Year and Top Model of the World contests.

2010 Bb. Pilipinas-International Krista Mae Kleiner, who will represent the country in the 2010 Miss International contest, has expressed condolences to the victims of the recent hostage crisis in Manila, although she said that she was a bit worried about her future trip to China.

“Representing the Philippines in the Miss International contest, I have the utmost faith in the integrity and the capacity for forgiveness and understanding for the Chinese people,” Kleiner said.

Last Monday, Kleiner, 20, who has just arrived from the US, went straight from the airport to the Quirino Grandstand in Manila, site of the recent hostage row, to offer prayers and flowers to the victims.

Sources at the Bb. Pilipinas Charities, Inc. (BPCI) said that the Philippines candidates are pushing through with their trips to China. But they said that decisions can be changed, depending on the situation.

The BPCI sends delegates to the annual Miss Universe, Miss World and Miss International pageants. Organizers said that they will soon issue a statement on their decision to join the annual beauty contests.

But 1979 Miss International Melanie Marquez said that the Philippine candidates should join the beauty contests in China.

“Our candidates should spread love, beauty and goodwill. She is an Ambassador of Goodwill.

2010 Bb. Pilipinas-World Czarina Gatbonton will represent the Philippines in the 60th Miss World beauty contest in Sanya, China on Oct. 30, 2010. The 50th Miss International pageant will be held in Chengdu, China on Nov. 7, 2010.

Nursing grad commits suicide after failing board exam (By Jenel Baclay, ABS-CBN Iloilo)

Nursing grad commits suicide after failing board exam
By Jenel Baclay, ABS-CBN Iloilo

MANILA, Philippines - A nursing graduate who failed the 2010 board examination committed suicide inside their home in Leon town, Iloilo province, Sunday morning.

Riza Joy Callada's parents told police they found the 21-year-old nursing graduate hanging in her room with a blanket wrapped around her neck.

Police said Riza Joy's father, Nicolas, revealed that their daughter asked them repeatedly what they would feel if she failed the 2010 nursing board examination.

The nursing graduate's father said he and Riza Joy's mom would always reassure their daughter that if she fails, she could just simply take the board examination again until she passes.

Police believe Riza Joy committed suicide after failing the licensure exam.

Riza Joy's family has asked the police to conduct autopsy on her body.

The licensure examinations' results were released last Friday (August 28).

The Professional Regulatory Commission (PRC) said more than 90,000 nursing graduates took the licensure examination, but only 37,679 passed.

By Nhoie Gee:

"What is one big mistake that you have made in your life and what did you do to make it right?”

“Thank you so much sir for that wonderful question. Good evening ladies and gentlemen. Good evening Las Vegas! You know what sir in my 22 years of existence I can say there is nothing major major, I mean problem that I have done in my life because I am very confident with my family with the love that they are giving to me. So thank you so much that I am here!”

Kaya Maria Venus Raj, MABUHAY KA!

MEGAN YOUNG FOR BINIBINING PILIPINAS?

Megan Young Finally Speaks Up
By: Nhoie Gee

Pilipinas 2011" at ng "Megan Young for Bb Pilipinas 2011"

"Hi Nhoie Gee..Thank you :) I have been thinking about it for a while but I still haven't made a decision yet. I still think I'm too young and immature to join such a contest. But thanks again for the head up;)"

"Hi Nhoie!

I'm still not sure about that. I'm really busy with work now, plus I'm going back to school in Benilde next term. I want to keep my focus on that as of now. Anyways, bata pa naman ako. I still have a few more years to think about and get ready for that. But as of now, work and school muna ako. We'll see:)"
